Here are the top performers this week. I’ll be adding an updated look at both the KingCo 3A baseball and softball brackets here in a bit.

Tennis
Anissa Bryant-Swift and Malia Lum captured the KingCo 3A doubles championship with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Chelsea Bailey and Julia Schubach of Mercer Island Tuesday. They will play in districts next week in an attempt to return to state and defend their doubles title.

Angela Chen, Amie Vo, Rixing Xu and Faith Mach all picked up singles wins as Newport beat Skyline 6-1 on Monday in KingCo 4A golf action. Two Knights doubles teams picked up wins as well, as Tomomi Matsushita and Emily Shavers beat Molly Knutson and Alyson Opitz 6-3, 6-2 and Crystal Shen and Miranda Edwards beat Nicole Nagao and Emilie Lehman 6-1,6-4.

Baseball
Monday wasn’t much of a highlight for Newport, but the finish of their game remains of note. The Knights, playing in a loser-out game against Lake Washington in the KingCo tournament, lost 5-4 in eight innings. Kang’s junior Wesley Russell hit a controversial home run high down the left field line. After a delay, the umpires ruled that the ball hooked around the foul pole. Newport would lose after failing to score in the bottom of the eighth.

Paul Heywood knocked in two runs and Rick Teegardan had a double and an RBI as Sammamish stunned Liberty 4-1 in the first round of the KingCo 3A tournament on Tuesday. Teegarden picked up the win on the mound for the Totems, while Heywood got the save. Sammamish scored four runs in the first inning of the loser-out game.

Bellevue beat Juanita 5-4 in the other loser-out game. No statistics were available following the game.

The Wolverines followed up that with a shocking 12-5 win over Mount Si that sent Bellevue into the KingCo title game. Charlie Kemp, Nick Moyer and Justin Patrick all knocked in two runs for the Wolverines. Michael Raine got the win on the mound.

Boys Lacrosse
Sammamish beat Nathan Hale 10-2 Monday in Division II lacrosse. Tyler Wright led Sammamish with three goals and four ground balls.

Brett Mennella scored four goals, had one assist and one ground ball to help Bellevue beat Northshore 13-9 in Division I lacrosse. Cole Hendrickson made six saves for the Wolverines.

Golf
Several Bellevue-area golfers qualified for the district tournament with good showings at the KingCo 3A/2A medalist tournament. Click here for the details on that.

I posted this story yesterday about Newports dominance at the 4A District 2 championship.
