Former Mariner Jeff Cirillo, former local pro Ben Johnson to host youth baseball camp

June 15th, 2011 at Wed, 15th, 2011 at 1:31 pm by Josh Suman

Jeff Cirillo, a 14-year MLB veteran and 2-time All-Star selection (1997, 2000), is hosting a youth baseball camp on July 18-21 at Clyde Hill Elementary.  Other instructors will include Jason Ellison, Chris Minaker and Ben Johnson.

Ellison, who attended South Kitsap High School and Lewis and Clark State, was drafted in the 22nd round of the 2000 amateur draft by the San Francisco Giants, made his MLB debut in 2003 and hit .316 in 352 at-bats in 2005 for the Giants. Ellison also spent time with the Mariners, Reds and Texas Rangers. He will be providing base running and outfield instruction at the camp.

Minaker starred for Edmonds-Woodway before graduating from Stanford with a Master’s in only four years, unofficially making him the only player in the program’s history to do so. He was offered a Rhodes’ Scholarship, but chose instead to sign with the hometown Mariners. From 2006-2008, Minaker bounced between farm clubs in the Mariners’ system before spending 31 games in the Astros’ system in 2009.

Ben Johnson played at Bellevue during his prep days before moving on to the University of Washington and then spending seven years in the Angels’ and Brewers’ organizations. Among other areas, Johnson will provide catching instruction and was a 3-time All-KingCo selection during his time at Bellevue, being named team MVP during his senior season.

The camp fee is $325 and includes a camp t-shirt. A $100 deposit secures a spot for your youth. Checks and credit cards are accepted.

Prior to joining the Bellevue Reporter, I was a sports reporter for several online-only publications around the Sound. I have also worked with XOS Digital, a scouting and new media service providing game tapes of potential NCAA student-athletes. Eastside Catholic High School is where my playing days ended and after high school I attended the University of Oregon, where I earned a B.A. in English. My hopes for the blog are to continue to uphold the high standards of content that became so familiar to our readers. The blog will contain extra items from stories that appear online and in print, quotes from coaches and players and other extra bits and pieces from around Bellevue-area Prep Sports. Please feel free to contact me with any questions, concerns or requests and I'll do my best to keep this blog as reader-friendly as it was under my predecessor!
