Saints ready for tomorrows play-in game
November 1st, 2010 at 12:27 pm by Joel WillitsInterlake coach Jason Rimkus says he’s not dwelling on the fact that his Saints are in the postseason with a 1-8 record.
“We could dwell all day on what our record is, but the fact of the matter is that it does not good for us to do that,” said Rimkus, who is in his first year. “Just to have the opportunity feels great.”
The Saints clinched a playoff spot Friday night when Renton lost to Hazen. Because of Interlake’s victory over Sammamish earlier this season, the Saints will host North Mason (4-5) tomorrow night at 7 p.m. in the West Central District play-in game. Tomorrow’s winner will travel to take on Clover Park on Saturday.
“I can tell you our kids are excited,” Rimkus said. “Regardless of how we got there, we’re here. And you can’t be any more prepared for a playoff game than by playing in our conference.”
Of Interlake’s eight losses, three have come at the hands of ranked 3A teams in No.1 Bellevue, No.5 Juanita and No.8 Liberty. Another loss came to Newport, which qualified for the round of 32 in 4A. The Saints were also without starting quarterback Matt Malos and starting tailback Jordan Todd in several early-season losses.
Now all that stands between the Saints and state berth is North Mason, which plays in the 2A Olympic League. The Bulldogs boast a triple-option offense, much like what Newport plays. The Knights beat Interlake 70-14.
“I talked to our outside linebackers about redemption,” said Rimkus, referencing the Saints struggles against the offense.
Rimkus said the players are excited and feeling confident after a good practice this weekend. He also said he feels the team is playing much better the last two weeks in losses to Liberty and Juanita.
“We’ve talked about a new life and a new season,” Rimkus said. “We’re playing our best football at the best time of the year.”
Week 9 picks
October 28th, 2010 at 12:30 pm by Joel WillitsCan the playoffs really be here already? It seems like just yesterday I was out at the high schools, talking to coaches and players for season preview articles. And now we’re talking about league championship games and crossover playoffs.
There’s no better time of the year than this. Each game becomes do or die – win or go home. Those stakes usually bring out the best in teams. It’s an exciting time to be a high school sports reporter.
BIG 5 MATCHUPS
No.3 Bothell Cougars (7-1) at No.1 Skyline Spartans (7-1)
Joel – No stranger to the KingCo championship game, these two teams have got to be used to seeing each other. For Bothell, Skyline has been Goliath; David won the championship game last year before the giant reasserted itself in the semifinals. Skyline sophomore quarterback Max Browne has made the loss of Jake Heaps seem like a quick bandaid pulled off. His composure in the pocket and decision making is downright scary for a sophomore. Bothell, hit with a spat of injuries over the course of the year, again plays the underdog. Pick: Skyline 28-21
Kevin – This is the third straight year these two teams have faced one another for the KingCo 4A title, with Skyline winning in 2008 and Bothell in 2009. Rosters might be completely different, but not much else has changed. Sophomore quarterback Max Browne has kept Skyline’s pass tradition alive and well (166 for 229, 2342 yards, 29 TDs, 5 INTs), while Bothell running back Luke Proulx is bowling over opponents (115 carries, 1,395 yards, 12 TDs). This game will no doubt come down to who can slow down the others’ strength. Skyline has shown its defense is susceptible to the run after allowing Newport 348 rushing yards three weeks ago and Eastlake’s Kyle Lappano to go for a school record 250 yards last week. Bothell has yet to face a pass-heavy team, so there’s no telling how their secondary will stack up against Skyline. I think home-field advantage, and the arm of Browne will carry the Spartans on Friday. Pick: Skyline 35-24
No.1 Bellevue Wolverines (7-1) at No.8 Liberty Patriots (6-2)
Joel – This has been the closest year Bellevue has come to not steamrolling their league competition since the new KingCo 3A/2A league took shape three seasons ago. I can’t remember the last time the Wolverines won two conference games by just a touchdown, but Juanita and Mount Si both hung close with the Wolverines. Liberty is hungry and a win in this game would make everyone forget about their losses to Juanita and Issaquah. Plus, a win creates a three-way tie for the league title. But Bellevue has a knack for stepping up and making big games blowouts. Pick: Bellevue 35-17
Kevin – Bellevue can lock up the KingCo 3A title with a victory over Liberty, while a loss would create a possible three-way tie between Juanita, Liberty and Bellevue (assuming Juanita beats Interlake). I’ve seen Liberty twice this season, and there’s little doubt it has a ton of talent with the three-pronged attack of quarterback Trey Wheeler, running back Chandler Jenkins and receiver Jake Bainton. Bellevue continues to do what it does best by running the ball with a plethora of backs, occasionally throwing the defense off with a pass from Kendrick Van Ackeren. This should be a real battle. Pick: Bellevue 28-24
Inglemoor Vikings (5-3) at Newport Knights (4-4)
Joel - Newport may be the best 4-4 team in the state. Every single on of their losses has come from a ranked team (Skyline, Bothell, Eastlake, Issaquah). Their defense is better than they get credit for and really, on one, not even Skyline, has been able to stop their rushing attack. The only thing stopping Newport has been themselves. QB Isaac Dotson was banged up last week against Issaquah. If he’s healthy, I expect Newport to take out Inglemoor. Pick: Newport 28-14
Kevin – This loser-out matchup should show just how big of a difference there is between the KingCo Crest and the KingCo Crown this season. Bothell has been the class of the Crown, but other than that, Crest teams have been inconsistent. Newport is a scrappy team that can flat out run the ball. Quarterback Isaac Dotson and back James Dupar have combined for nearly 1,500 yards on the ground this season, while the Knights have gone for 2,489 total yards on the ground. Pick: Newport 35-21
Woodinville Falcons (4-4) at Issaquah Eagles (6-2)
Joel – Is Braden Bouwman Ethan Kalin? No. But the senior backup is going to be the man now after Kalin dislocated his elbow last week against Newport. Bouwman did enough to win against Newport and he’ll have to do the same against a Woodinville team with major potential. But Issaquah has a potent rushing attack keyed by Taylor Wyman and a young freshman in Jack Gellatly, who had a breakout game last week against Newport. Pick: Issaquah 42-14
Kevin – Issaquah hit a major bump in the road last week when starting quarterback Ethan Kalin dislocated the elbow on his throwing arm putting him out for the rest of the season. The Eagles still possess a ton of talent to support backup Braden Bouwman. With the emergence of freshman running back Jack Gellatly and experienced senior running Taylor Wyman, the Eagles should be able move the ball on the ground and look for Bouwman to make the short, high-percentage passes. Woodinville has struggled this season, but is always dangerous with quarterback Brett Arrivey taking snaps. The Falcons lost to the Eagles in the exact same loser-out game last season. I’m sure they haven’t forgotten. This could be close early, but expect Issaquah to pull away. Pick: Issaquah 35-14
Roosevelt Roughriders (3-5) at No.8 Eastlake Wolves (6-2)
Joel – Not much to this one. Eastlake already beat Roosevelt once, and they’ve gotten nothing but better as the year has gone on. Pick: Eastlake 44-0
Kevin – Eastlake has already encountered this week’s opponent, Roosevelt, beating the Roughriders 42-7 in week three. The Wolves continue to build momentum behind their running attack, and quarterback Keegan Kemp looks stronger week after week. I expect a similar outcome to the early-season meeting. Pick: Eastlake 45-14

Garfield situation affects Sammamish football
October 19th, 2010 at 10:30 am by Joel WillitsBy now, many of you have heard of the real mess going on over at Garfield High School. Ineligible players participated in the Bulldogs game against Sammamish in September, and as a result, athletic director Jim Valiere has been placed on administrative leave and football coaches Anthony Allen and Anthony Kelley have resigned.
Mason Kelley’s story from the Times (linked above) explains the situation and notes that the Bulldogs will forfeit their 24-22 win over the Totems on Sept. 10.
It seems like details are still very murky over at Garfield. We’ll see how everything plays out.
Sammamish is now officially 1-6. I’m sure that’s not what the way they wanted to pick up their first win, but it is what it is.

Latrelle Dukes scores the winning touchdown in Bellevue's 21-14 win over Juanita. Chad Coleman/Bellevue Reporter
As we keep rolling into the season, we are now at the point where playoff positioning starts to take shape. This week features several games with big playoff implications. Eastlake-Issaquah should determine the Crest’s No.2 team (barring further upsets in the season). Newport can’t afford a loss to a seemingly-inferior Redmond squad. Interlake, with all of one win, is still alive for a 2A playoff spot, but that window will likely close with a loss to Lake Washington.

BIG 5 MATCHUPS
Eastlake Wolves (5-1) at Issaquah Eagles (5-1)
Joel: Eastlake, to me, has been a team flying under the radar. Anytime you have a strong rushing attack – like the Wolves do with Kyle Lappano – you can stay in games, grinding down the clock and taking advantage of opponents mistakes. I’m not sure of the health of Issaquah quarterback Ethan Kalin, but I do know this – the Eagles have been one of the most consistent teams in recent years. But I like this Eastlake team. I like the upset. Pick: Eastlake 35-27
Kevin – There’s a lot on the line in this KingCo Crest matchup as the winner will grab sole possession of second place in the division with one week remaining. These two teams couldn’t be more similar. Both have junior quarterbacks, who not only mobile, but have the ability to get the ball down the field. Both teams have enormous lines, and both teams can run the ball effectively out of the backfield. The one question mark for Eastlake might lie in the defensive backfield. They’ve proven they can stop the run, but the Wolves have yet to face a team that will air it out as much as the Eagles. In Eastlake’s game against Newport, they allowed the Knights ‚Äî a team who primarily runs the ball ‚Äî to score on a 65-yard pass play. On several other attempts, Newport receivers either dropped balls, or didn’t quite turn their heads in time. If they want to be successful, the Wolves will need to tighten up the pass defense, especially against one of the league’s top receivers, Evan Peterson. Pick: Issaquah 21-17
Juanita Rebels (5-1) at Mount Si Wildcats (4-2)
Joel: I watched Juanita hang in with the state’s No.1 team last week, grinding it out against Bellevue and coming up just short. I like what this Rebels team has – a rushing attack that chews up the yardage and a defense that’s as tough as they come. Mount Si has quietly embraced its role as the conference’s sleeper team, but I see the Rebels bouncing back to get a big win in this one. Pick: Juanita 28-12
Kevin – Juanita is licking its wounds after last week’s tough, 21-14, loss to top-ranked Bellevue. Despite the defeat the Rebels proved they can play with the best the 3A has to offer. And they’ll certainly be hungry to get back on track. Mount Si is certainly no slouch, and you can never count the Wildcats out on their home turf. They know they need this win in order to keep hopes of a league championship alive. Expect a hard-fought battle in the trenches, and another game that comes down to the wire. Pick: Juanita 28-24
Woodinville Falcons (3-3) at Inglemoor Vikings (3-3)
Joel: This one is all about seeding. Bothell’s locked up as the Crown’s No.1 team. Woodinville and Inglemoor are fighting for the second spot for crossover games. I like what Woodinville’s young offense has been able to do, and I like the Falcons, who have been playing well lately, to win this one in a close battle. Pick: Woodinville 21-20
Kevin – This is a battle for second place in the KingCo Crown, a spot that could be crucial come playoff time. Both of these teams have had similar seasons so far, beating up on weaker opponents while coming up a few touchdowns short to Crown leader, Bothell. This should be a regular shootout of neighboring schools. Pick: Woodinville 32-28
Interlake Saints (1-5) at Lake Washington Kangaroos (2-4)
Joel: It’s not often that a 1-5 team has a game with playoff implications, but Interlake isn’t your typical KingCo 3A team. As a 2A team, they can make the playoffs if they’re record finishes in the top-three of the Seamount League. Each Saints win over a 3A or 4A opponent equals 1.5 wins in the eyes of their final Seamount record. So if they were to win this game over the Kangs, Interlake would be looking at a 3-win season in the Seamount. That’s huge. Coach Jason Rimkus knows this is a must win. The Saints finally have quarterback Matt Malos and running back Jordan Todd both healthy and the results were immediate – Todd rushed for 119 yards and a touchdown and Malos tossed four touchdown passes in Interlake’s 41-14 win over Sammamish. Pick: Interlake 28-14
Kevin – OK, I’m not quite where to start with this one. These are two teams who have obviously struggled this season. They both have a common opponent in Sammamish. Interlake is coming off a 41-14 win over the Totems, while Lake Washington beat Sammamish 38-14 earlier this season. Interlake is healthy for the first time since the second week of the season as the Saints got back quarterback Matt Malos and running back Jordan Todd. Momentum could be the difference in this one. Pick: Interlake 35-28
Skyline Spartans (5-1) at Jackson Timberwolves (3-3)
Joel: No one has been able to slow Skyline down since the Spartan’s opening-game loss to Liberty. Quarterback Max Browne has been better and better each week, and the Spartans have rolled. I don’t see that changing when Wesco opponent Jackson faces off with Skyline Friday. Pick: Skyline 35-7
Kevin – The KingCo has dominated WesCo this season in crossover games, and it’s highly doubtful that will change this week when top-ranked Skyline rolls into Everett to face Jackson. The Timberwolves are down in talent after a couple of successful seasons, while the Spartans are just hitting their stride. Skyline sophomore quarterback Max Browne has completed nearly 70 percent of his passes (116 of 167) for 1,668 yards, 20 touchdowns and three interceptions. Look for Browne to have a big night facing a team that doesn’t see much passing. Pick: Skyline 42-14

E.J. Savannah signs with B.C. Lions
October 8th, 2010 at 10:47 pm by Joel WillitsOne interesting note I confirmed tonight is that Bellevue and University of Washington linebacker E.J. Savannah has signed with the British Columbia Lions of the Canadian Football League.
Savannah graduated from the University of Washington in 2009. He played only seven games that season after suffering an injury that forced him to miss five games. He graduated from Bellevue in 2004 and was part of the Wolverines run of four-straight Class 3A state championships.
I’ll have more as this story develops.
