Quarterfinals Football Predictions

November 17th, 2010 at 3:11 pm by Joel Willits

Last week included some big upsets – No.2 Lynden was bounced from Class 2A despite heading into the playoffs with a perfect record. No one would count Bothell’s win over Kentwood as an upset, but I’ll bet no one predicted a 49-14 shellacking.
This week is where things get real interesting, with some great rivalry games on the slate in Bellevue-Liberty and Skyline-Issaquah. Surprising Interlake has a chance to pull the upset of the playoffs with a game against No.1 and undefeated Archbishop Murphy. Can a team with a record of four games under .500 really reach the Tacoma Dome? We’ll find out Saturday.

Last week’s results
Joel: 5-1
Kevin: 4-2
Readers: 4-2

Overall
Joel: 90-23
Kevin: 89-24
Readers: 87-23-3

BIG 5 GAMES
No.1 Bellevue Wolverines (10-1) vs. No.7 Liberty Patriots (8-3)
Joel – The game of the playoffs. Bellevue and Liberty will meet Friday for the fifth time in three years, with the Wolverines owning all five. The last thing the Liberty seniors want to do is end their careers with another loss to Bellevue (last year, the Wolverines beat the Patriots in the Class 3A championship game). This will be the biggest test Bellevue has faced since, well, the final week of the regular season, when they just squeezed past Liberty. For Liberty to finally get over the hump and beat the Wolverines, Trey Wheeler, Jake Bainton and Chandler Jenkins will have to play the games of their lives. The defense will need to limit the Bellevue run game. But these Wolverines are a little different than past Bellevue squads – they’ve probably played more close league games this year than any other iteration since 2001. If there is a team that is prepared to play Bellevue’s offense, it’s Liberty. This will be the greatest test for the Wolverines of the playoffs. And while it’s always hard to beat a team twice in one year, I’m going with Bellevue in this one. Pick: Bellevue 23-20
Kevin – Here comes round two of regular-season matchup that saw Bellevue eke out a 23-20 win. The Wolverines have continued do everything right since suffering an early-season loss to Skyline. Liberty has shown it’s vulnerability at times this season, but has also displayed the grit from 2009 that got them to the championship game. Revenge will certainly be on the Patriots’ minds and with a healthy Jake Bainton, it could be attainable. It’s hard to go against the team that gets it done every year, however. Pick: Bellevue 24-17

No.8 Issaquah Eagles (9-2) vs. No.1 Skyline Spartans (10-1)
Joel – This is the Bellevue-Liberty of 4A on steroids. Longtime rivals, these two squads have both seen their ups and downs this season. But, for whatever reason, Issaquah just can’t get over whatever mental block they have when it comes to the Spartans. They haven’t beaten the team on the plateau since 2006, including a 35-6 loss earlier this season. Issaquah quarterback Brayden Bouwman has been more than serviceable since taking over for injured starter Ethan Kalin in the final game of the regular season. Skyline, however, has been getting better each week since their season-opening loss to Liberty. Pick: Skyline 24-17
Kevin – These two teams squared off in week four with Skyline prevailing 35-6. Issaquah was in the game through the third quarter, but were unable to stay close after losing starting quarterback Ethan Kalin to a concussion before halftime. It was backup Braden Bouwman’s first appearance of the season, and the nerves were apparent. Now Bouwman has had a chance to grasp the Eagles’ offense and has looked strong, most recently leading Issaquah to a double-overtime win over Olympia and a romp of Marysville-Pilchuck. This is always a hard-fought rivalry game and I expect it to be no different Friday night. It should be a lot closer than week four. Pick: Skyline 28-24

Interlake Saints (4-8) vs. No.1 Archbishop Murphy Wildcats (11-0)
Joel – This is a tough one. On one hand you have the undefeated and wire-to-wire Class 2A No.1 team in Archbishop Murphy. On the other hand you have the surprising Interlake Saints, a team that has won three in a row and has proven that a 1-8 regular season in KingCo is nothing to laugh at. The Saints offense has really come alive the last three weeks where the team looks unstoppable at times. After covering Interlake’s last three games, I like them to continue their surprising run all the way into the Tacoma Dome. Pick: Interlake 35-34
Kevin – I haven’t seen either one of these teams this season, but I know Interlake is on fire. Running back Jordan Todd has 20 touchdowns in the Saints’ last four games, posing a real threat for any opposing defense. I saw top-ranked Archbishop Murphy fall to Eastside Catholic last season so I know the Wildcats aren’t invincible. Interlake is showing just how beneficial it is to play in one of the toughest conferences in the state during the regular season. I think it might be closer than some on the outside might think. Pick: Archbishop Murphy 32-28

No.5 Chiawana Riverhawks (10-0) vs. No.3 Ferris Saxons (11-0)
Joel – Eastern Washington folks always hate to see their top teams facing off in the quarterfinals instead of the semi’s or even the championship, but it is what it is. And in this case, it’s the two best teams from the east of the Cascades facing off in what should be one heck of a football game. Riverhawks running back Jordan Downing scored four rushing touchdowns a week ago against Newport and the defense limited the stellar Knights rushing attack to under 100 yards, something even Skyline couldn’t do. That said, I expect Ferris, who has shown their strength since week one, to win this game and move on to a semifinal game against Bothell. Pick: Ferris 23-14
Kevin – Ferris continues to be the class of 4A teams on the east side of the state. This is second-year Chiawana’s chance to make a name for itself. The Riverhawks host, but it’s hard to pick against the Saxons. Pick: Ferris 35-21

No.2 Capital Cougars (11-0) vs. No.8 O’Dea Irish (10-1)
Joel – A rematch of an early season game in which Capital picked up a big win. I like what the Cougars have been doing and I think they are a sleeper team to reach the Class 3A title game. Pick: Capital 35-21
Kevin – This is a rematch of week one, where Capital blanked O’Dea 28-0 on its home turf. This time the Cougars get to host the Irish in Olympia. I’ve seen O’Dea in person and they have a ton of athletes capable of making big plays. The Irish have sharpened their offense since the first week of the season, but I think Capital’s defense has the edge in this one. Pick: Capital 28-14

Class 4A
Auburn Trojans (9-2) vs. No.2 Curtis Vikings (11-0)
Joel: Curtis 42-30
Kevin – Curtis 28-21

Bellarmine Prep Lions (10-1) vs. No.4 Bothell Cougars (9-2)
Joel: Bothell 35-13
Kevin – Bothell 35-14

Class 3A
No.4 Camas Papermakers (11-0) vs. No.6 Lakes Lancers (10-1)
Joel: Camas 21-20
Kevin – Camas 28-20

No.5 Kamiakin Braves (11-0) vs. No.9 Mount Spokane Wildcats (10-1)
Joel: Kamiakin 42-35
Kevin – Kamiakin 21-17

Class 2A
No.4 Tumwater Thunderbirds (10-1) vs. Burlington-Edison Tigers (8-3)
Joel: Tumwater 28-10
Kevin – Tumwater 35-13

No.3 Prosser Mustangs (10-1) vs. East Valley Knights (6-5)
Joel: Prosser 45-0
Kevin – Prosser 32-24

Mark Morris Monarchs (7-3) vs. No.10 Anacortes Seahawks (7-3)
Joel: Mark Morris 21-20
Kevin – Mark Morris 28-7

Week 11 Football Predictions

November 11th, 2010 at 1:06 pm by Joel Willits

After covering football in the area for four seasons, it does not surprise me in the least to see six of eight schools in our coverage areas reach state. The competition is that good.

Now we’ll see who can keep going, and who gets bounced early.

BIG 6 MATCHUPS
Eastlake Wolves (8-2) at Curtis Vikings (10-0)
Joel – Tough, tough call here. On one hand you have the Wolves, who escaped the treacherous KingCo 4A league with just one loss to Skyline (their other came in the opening week to Central Kitsap). On the other hand you have the Curtis Vikings, the team that held the No.2 ranking in 4A all season long. But have the Vikings faced a team as physical as the Wolves all year? I think this is the game where we find out how good Curtis really is. I’m taking the Vikings in a close game, but would not be surprised if they are upset by the plucky Wolves and running back Kyle Lappano. Pick: Curtis 21-17
Kevin – I’m still not sold on the SPSL, or Curtis. The Vikings probably should have ran away with last week’s preliminary round game against Lake Stevens, but squeaked out a 31-14 win. It was 24-14 until a late touchdown. Eastlake had an off-game as well, battling a slew of penalties to earn a 35-14 win over Jackson. The first thing head coach Gene Dales told his team is that they’ll need to turn the intensity level around quickly this week. I fully expect this game to come down to the wire. But until I see the SPSL prove it can hang with a KingCo team, I have a hard time picking against the Wolves. Pick: Eastlake 28-24

Rogers Rams (9-1) at Skyline Spartans (9-1)
Joel – No.1 Skyline had a bit of a scare last week, trailing 14-2 at halftime to Central Kitsap before rallying to win. Something tells me that coach Mat Taylor will have his team fired up after that slow start. Max Browne has been incredible at quarterback for the Spartans this year. And state is when big players step up – so watch out for WR Kasen Williams to have a big game. Pick: Skyline 23-13
Kevin – Skyline survived a major scare last week, edging Central Kitsap 16-14. If I’ve noticed one trend while covering Skyline the last three years, whenever the Spartans stumble, they always respond in a big way. I look for quarterback Max Browne, the offensive line, and the talented corps of receivers to have a big night. Pick: Skyline 34-14

Timberline Blazers (7-3) at Bellevue Wolverines (9-1)
Joel – Tough to count against Bellevue in the early rounds of the playoffs, especially a week after they dismantled Bainbridge without four of their starters. The only way I see Timberline escaping with a win is if the Wolverines are caught looking forward to a potential rematch with Liberty in the quarterfinals. But coach Butch Goncharoff keeps his team grounded (bad pun notwithstanding) and I’m sure they’ll be ready to play. Running back Joey Mangialardi looks to be back to form after suffering a concussion against Juanita. The senior scored three touchdowns last week and helped Bellevue roll up 365 yards on the ground. Pick: Bellevue 42-14
Kevin – Look no further than last week’s 54-7 romp of Bainbridge‚ Bellevue is in playoff mode. The Wolverines continue to successfully spread the ball around in their multifacted Wing-T attack. I expect them to roll again. Pick: Bellevue 45-7

Newport Knights (6-4) at Chiawana Riverhawks (9-0)
Joel – Newport, as one coach told me, is playing their best football at the right time of the season. Chiawana has been solid all year, but face their first test from the tough KingCo league. No one has slowed down the Newport rushing attack this year; only the Knights have stopped themselves. I expect James Dupar, Louis Jachim, Eric Rodan, Isaac Dotson and company to have a big game on the ground and pull off the upset. Pick: Newport 21-14
Kevin – Word on the street is that the Chiawana defense is susceptible to the run. That’s bad news for any team facing Newport. The Knights are one of the best ground teams in 4A, if not the state. It’s a long trip to Pasco and the Riverhawks are obviously the class of the Big Nine‚ so it’s not going to be a cakewalk. I still like the KingCo 4A team in this case. Pick: Newport 28-21

Marysville-Pilchuck Tomahawks (7-3) at Issaquah Eagles (8-2)
Joel – You just can’t count out the Eagles. Coming off a 2OT thriller against Olympia, the pesky Eagles are battle-tested with playoff games: they’ve played three already. Their reward for beating Olympia is a matchup they should be able to handle in Marysville-Pilchuck. Backup quarterback Braden Bouwman has been steady in his elevation to the starting position thus far. Pick: Issaquah 34-20
Kevin – If the stats I found were accurate, Marysville-Pilchuck has 3,154 yards of total offense this season‚ 2,950 of which has come on the ground. If Issaquah’s defense can hone in on the Tomahawks’ run game, and the Eagles can keep progressing as an offensive unit behind back-up quarterback Braden Bouwman, I don’t see this game being very close at all. Pick: Issaquah 42-14

Port Angeles Roughriders (9-1) at Interlake Saints (3-8)
Joel – The Saints have shown what they can do after a rough regular season. They dispatched North Mason on Tuesday and then dismantled Clover Park Saturday. Junior running back Jordan Todd has been absolutely terrific (aided by great play from his offensive line), scoring 18 touchdowns in his last three games. The Saints think teams should know by now that they are real. I have to agree. Pick: Interlake 35-21
Kevin – Port Angeles is 9-1 this season, but it also has to be taken into account which conference the Roughriders play in. Interlake has shown its last two games that playing the best KingCo 3A teams‚ some of the best teams in the state‚ they are ready for prime time in 2A. I expect the Saints and running back Jordan Todd (18 touchdowns in his last three games) to keep trucking along. Pick: Interlake 34-21

Week 10 picks

November 5th, 2010 at 10:36 am by Joel Willits

It’s do or die this week. It’s the round of 32, with teams across the state vying for a spot in the state playoffs. There are definitely some intriguing matchups, including six Bellevue, Sammamish and Issaquah teams still alive (hence the Big 6). Here’s a look at what we think will happen this week.

BIG 6 MATCHUPS
No.8 Eastlake Wolves (7-2) at Jackson Timberwolves (4-5)
Joel – One thing’s been proven this year: the WesCo does just not compare to KingCo. WesCo teams struggled mightily against teams from the KingCo conference. In fact, Jackson was drubbed by Skyline just a few weeks ago. Eastlake, with its powerful running game with Kyle Lappano, wins this one going away. Pick: Eastlake 45-13
Kevin – Eastlake has already flexed its muscle against two WesCo opponents this season, beating Snohomish and Mariner by a combined score of 103-13. I don’t see much changing this Saturday. Expect the Wolves to pound the football with running back Kyle Lappano and keep the Timberwolves off balance with the occasional throw from quarterback Keegan Kemp. Pick: Eastlake 38-7

Issaquah Eagles (7-2) at No.9 Olympia Bears (8-1)
Joel
– This is a tough one. Issaquah will be playing without starting quarterback Ethan Kalin, but it didn’t hurt them much last week. But Olympia is a much different team from Woodinville. We’ll find out how good they are Saturday. I still think Issaquah, with Taylor Wyman and Jack Gellatly have enough firepower to win this one. Pick: Issaquah 26-14
Kevin - This should be an extremely competitive game. Issaquah is still trying to find itself after losing starting quarterback Ethan Kalin for the season. The Eagles have focused more on the run the last two games and have found success behind senior Taylor Wyman and freshman Jack Gellatly. Olympia will be a much stiffer test than last week’s opponent, Woodinville, but I think head coach Chris Bennett will have his Eagles ready. Pick: Issaquah 28-24

Central Kitsap Cougars (6-3) at No.1 Skyline Spartans (8-1)
Joel
– The Cougars surprised Eastlake at the beginning of the year, but still lost three games throughout the season. Skyline is looking much like the reigning state champions that they are. Spartans just have too many weapons to go down this early in the playoffs. Pick: Skyline 42-20
Kevin – Central Kitsap is 1-0 against KingCo competition after beating Eastlake 13-10 in week one. The Cougars base their offense behind the run game and controlling the clock ‚something recent Skyline opponents Eastlake and Bothell tried but failed at. Central Kitsap hasn’t seen the likes of sophomore quarterback Max Browne, or the talented Spartan receiving corps. Pick: Skyline 38-14

Newport Knights (5-4) at Kentlake Falcons (7-2)

Joel - How many teams in the state with four losses have had them all come to top-10 teams in the state? I think Newport may very well be the only ones. The Knights are healthy and sport a more than healthy running game – lighting up No.1 Skyline for more than 300 yards earlier this year. Kentlake has plenty of athletes, but Newport’s ability to grind out the clock will be the difference. Pick: Newport 24-14
Kevin -If there’s a better 5-4 team in the state, I’d like to hear about them. Newport has held its own in a very tough KingCo Crest division. Kentlake’s two losses have come to two of the SPSL’s best in Kentwood and Auburn. The Falcons possess a lot of talent, but it’s hard to pick against a team as battle-tested as the Knights. The ability to run and control the clock gives Newport the edge in this one. Pick: Newport 28-21

Bainbridge Spartans (7-2) at No.1 Bellevue Wolverines (8-1)
Joel
– This version of the Wolverines comes battle tested. A close loss to Skyline and big, close wins against Juanita, Mount Si and Liberty has this Bellevue squad knowing how to win. This game is where we’ll see the difference between a KingCo team and a Metro League team. Besides, it’s a bad idea to count against the Wolverines in the playoffs. Bellevue goes back to state with a big win. Pick: Bellevue 35-10
Kevin – Bainbridge fared well in a weaker Metro division, but Bellevue is leaps and bounds beyond anything the Spartans have seen this season. I expect the Wolverines to put up a ton of yards on the ground and cruise through to the 3A tournament. Pick: Bellevue 38-7

Interlake Saints (2-8) at Clover Park Warriors (5-4)
Joel
– No, your eyes are not deceiving you. Interlake really is one game away from the state playoffs with a 2-8 record. This team is about as battle tested as a 2A team can be though: off their eight losses, three came to top-10 3A teams and a fourth came to a 4A playoff team (Newport). The Saints blew out North Mason Tuesday night thanks to Jordan Todd’s seven touchdowns, but couldn’t slam the door late and almost let the Bulldogs back into the game. They can’t do that Saturday. Still, I think the Saints have a real shot at the upset. Pick: Interlake 42-34
Kevin – Interlake might just be coming around. The Saints earned a play-in victory Tuesday afternoon against North Mason to get them into Saturday’s game. While Interlake has struggled they have faced some of the toughest talent around. That experience will certainly give them a chance to sneak into the 2A state tournament. On the other hand, Clover Park plays in a very weak division. I smell upset. Pick: Interlake 21-17
