Checking in on Aaron Bright

December 15th, 2010 at 3:19 pm by Joel Willits

Today, as I was putting the finishing touches on our boys basketball feature, I decided to check in on former Bellevue star Aaron Bright, now a freshman at Stanford.

Bright has played in all seven of Stanford’s games, averaging just over 15 minutes a game for the Cardinal, who are 5-2 this season. He has scored 32 points total and has gone 6 for 14 from three-point range. Just like his days at Bellevue, he’s passing the rock well – his 12 assists through seven games are second on the team. He’s also the only Cardinal still shooting 100 percent on free throws – though he’s just 4 for 4.

Reporter Newspapers Basketball Poll | Week 2

December 14th, 2010 at 11:26 am by Joel Willits

Week two saw a few changes this week. A few new teams emerged in the rankings, a few fell down a few spots or fell out and a few moved up. The biggest jump, however, was easily the Kentwood boys team, leaping from No. 10 to No.3 after a nice week that saw wins over No.9 Auburn and No.5 Jackson.

On the local front, Bellevue has looked impressive in its first two games, and the voters took note, moving the Wolverines from No.9 to No.7. Sammamish is on the bubble, at 4-1 looking like a team that could take a leap into the top-10 sometime soon.

No local girls teams made the top-10 in 4A or 3A.

Championship Game Predictions

December 2nd, 2010 at 3:12 pm by Joel Willits

With tomorrow’s Class 3A state championship kicking the title games off, we’ve posted our predictions for all to view. It’s been a fun year trying to predict these games, and we appreciate you following along. Make sure to vote and leave feedback on who you think will win the big games!

Class 4A
Skyline Spartans (12-1) vs. Ferris Saxons (13-0)
Joel – It would behoove Skyline to not act like last week’s thrilling, unbelievable, inconceivable and breathtaking win over Curtis was the championship game. Unlike most people, I don’t think that the Spartans are simply going to roll all over Ferris. The Saxons have a sturdy quarterback in Ben Goodwin, whose accuracy (four interceptions as opposed to 25 touchdowns) has really carried them. Max Browne, however, has emerged as one of the best high school quarterbacks I’ve ever laid eyes on. The sophomore, (sophomore!) has thrown for 48 touchdowns and 3,880 yards. That’s video game numbers. I think we will see Kasen Williams take over like he did last week and lead Skyline to another title. Pick: Skyline 23-20
Kevin – Some might say the real 4A championship was played last week when No. 1 Skyline and No. 2 Curtis clashed in a semifinal contest many labeled an instant classic. Regardless, there is still one more game to be played, and this undefeated team from the east side of the state is no slouch. Ferris has rolled through the Greater Spokane League, crushing opponents by a margin of 436-128. The Saxons have displayed a balanced offense behind the arm of junior quarterback Ben Goodwin, who has thrown for over 2,000 yards, 25 TDs and just four interceptions. Running back Kole Heidinger has carried the ball over 200 times for 1,200 yards and 13 TDs. Ferris has really hung its hat on its defense this year, holding opponents to under 10 points per game, while allowing no more than 20 points in any game. Will the Saxons be able to get to Spartans’ quarterback Max Browne (3,880 yards, 48 TDs)? Teams who have had success against Skyline have done just that. That said, Spartans’ head coach Mat Taylor will have his team prepared to deal with the pressure. With a fourth straight state title in its sights, I see little getting in the way of Skyline. Pick: Skyline 38-20

Class 3A
Bellevue Wolverines (12-1) vs. Kamiakin Braves (13-0)
Joel – Kamiakin presents a pretty good challenge for the Wolverines, as they will rely heavily on the spread offense and the arm of Joey Jansen, who has passed for 2,734 yards and 36 touchdowns. The last time Bellevue’s defense struggled? Against Skyline, who operates out of the spread. Teams struggle against Bellevue when they start tossing the ball up blindly. Kamiakin will not do that. With several playmakers, including senior Tim White (10 receiving touchdowns, 10 interception/punt returns for scores), the Braves should be the best offense the Wolverines have seen in a while. But you’d be a poor betting man to lay money against Bellevue in the state title game – after all, they haven’t lost in the big one in their last seven appearances in the title game. Kendrick Van Ackeren, Michael Foreman, Marcus Henry and the rest of the Wolverines are playing their best football of the year. I think Bellevue takes this for their third-straight, but I think it’s going to be close. Pick: Bellevue 35-34
Kevin – This is a great matchup. Kamiakin, the virtual unknown from the eastside of the state, vs. Bellevue, the perennial powerhouse from the westside. Bellevue has done nothing that get stronger in the playoffs behind its Wing-T attack. Quarterback Kendrick Van Ackeren has the misdirection-based offense functioning at the top of its game. But, Kamiakin also presents an interesting challenge for Bellevue. The Braves run most of their offense out of a shotgun spread. The last time Bellevue faced a team who did that – Skyline – it resulted in the Wolverines only loss of the season. Kamiakin quarterback Joey Jansen has broke all kinds of school records, throwing for just shy of 3,000 yards and 36 touchdowns. The result of this game will be determined by defense. Which of these teams will most effectively be able to slow the other? I expect a dogfight on Friday night. That said, it’s hard to go against the program who has done it so many times before. Pick: Bellevue 28-24

Class 2A
Archbishop Murphy Wildcats (13-0) vs. Tumwater Thunderbirds (11-1)
Joel – Be ready to watch a lot of running. With both teams in the Wing-T, the passing game shouldn’t be a factor here. Alex Galgano has been a beast for Archbishop Murphy all season long, while Tumwater has been quiet, but effective all season long. But I think Archbishop Murphy, with its host of game breakers, ultimately win this one. Pick: Archbishop Murphy 28-13
Kevin – These two teams are going to run, run, and run some more. Archbishop Murphy and Tumwater both operate out of the Wing-T formation. Alex Galgano leads the Wildcats with 92.5 yards per game, while Ronnie Hastie leads the Thunderbirds with 74.3 yards per game. The question is, which one will run the misdirection-based offense more effectively? No. 1-ranked Archbishop Murphy has dominated all but one of its contests this season, while Tumwater has rolled since a close week-one loss to 4A Olympia. Both squads are operating at the top of their games, which could result in a real shootout. I think Dave Ward’s Archbishop Murphy squad has just a few more weapons, which will make the difference. Pick: Archbishop Murphy 35-32

Bellevue-Kamiakin preview

December 1st, 2010 at 2:38 pm by Joel Willits

When Bellevue meets Kamiakin Friday at 4 p.m. in the Class 3A state championship at the Tacoma Dome, it will be a matchup of vastly conflicting styles.
The Wolverines (12-1), as always, will boast their Wing-T offense, an offense they’ve used to run their way to seven state titles in nine seasons. Kamiakin (13-0), one of three high schools in Kennewick, will come out with their spread offense, a record-setting unit that has shattered school records.
Western Washington fans may not be familiar with the Braves, who, prior to a few years ago, had long been a Class 4A team.
Here’s what you can expect to see tonight – all Kamiakin photos are courtesy of talented Tri-City Herald photographer Kai-Huei Yau. See the Herald’s website for more photos. Bellevue photos, as usual, by our talented Chad Coleman.

The Offense
Kamiakin senior quarterback Joey Jansen has smashed the Braves’ school record for touchdowns in a season – a mark (25) that he surpassed in week eight. Jansen has now tossed 36 touchdowns to go with 2,734 yards and 13 interceptions. Operating mostly out of the shotgun, Kamiakin’s spread offense is anchored by Jansen and a trio of talented senior receivers in Tim White, AJ Griffiths and Tyler Holle. The three have combined for 198 catches for 1,651 yards and 28 touchdowns. When the Braves run the ball, expect to see Dom Davis, who leads the team with 734 yards and 11 touchdowns. The Braves offensive line is made up of mostly juniors and first-year starters, although coach Scott Biglin has been high on the group since before the season began.

Myles Jack rushed for 113 yards and two scores last week.

Bellevue senior quarterback Kendrick Van Ackeren directs the Wolverines’ Wing-T attack, one that has shown, as always, speed and deception matters more than who runs the ball. Each week it seems the Wolverines have a new back breaking out – last week it was Myles Jack, who rushed for 113 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries. Junior Latrelle Dukes has been a consistent force for the Wolverines this season, showing tough running ability right up the middle for Bellevue. He rushed for 104 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries last week against Lakes. Senior Marcus Henry and junior Jake Eldrenkamp anchor Bellevue’s offensive line.

Kamiakin senior Tim White has caught 10 receiving touchdowns and has returned 10 punts or interceptions for scores. Kai-Huei Yau/Tri-City Herald

The Big Play Threats
Kamiakin senior wide receiver Tim White will receive plenty of attention tonight. White is the Braves’ big-play guy with 20 total touchdowns – 10 receiving and 10 from either punt returns or interception returns. According to Tri-City Herald sportswriter Kevin Anthony, who covers Kamiakin, teams have begun to punt the ball out of bounds rather than take a chance at kicking to White. White had a four-week stretch at the end of the regular season and the beginning of the players where he returned five punts for scores.

You can always count on Bellevue quarterback Kendrick Van Ackeren to make something happen.

Bellevue senior quarterback Kendrick Van Ackeren has been a difference-maker on both offense and defense for the Wolverines. Offensively, he’s been smart with the ball and, when Bellevue drops back to pass, he’s been accurate and a threat to run or pass. Last week against Lakes Van Ackeren rolled out to the right as if to run, stopped and launched a bullet to a wide-open Joey Moore for a 35-yard touchdown. On defense the senior has five interceptions, including one last week against Lakes. Teams can’t simply throw it up blindly against Bellevue – they have to be precise with Van Ackeren and cornerback Michael Foreman in the defensive backfield.

Speedy Defenses
Kamiakin’s defense has been overseen by coordinator Tim Maher for three decades. Its anchored on the line by end Jon Allen, an undersized but quick player with speed off the end. The school’s all-time leader in both tackles and sacks, Allen routinely chases down ballcarriers running away from him. Cornerback Shad Fletcher has 10 interceptions this season for Braves, which are allowing just 212 yards a game to opponents this year.

Senior lineman Marcus Henry (72) and sophomore linebacker Sean Constantine sack Lakes quarterback Cedric Dozier last week.

Bellevue’s defense has greatly improved over the course of the season and might be playing its best ball of the year. After several close calls during the regular season, including the week two loss to Skyline, the Wolverines have allowed just 28 points in their last four games. Only Timberline has scored more than seven points against Bellevue in the state playoffs. A consistent defensive line and a steady linebacking corp  teams with a strong secondary to limit opponents chances. Sophomore linebacker Sean Constantine has been a real find for the Wolverines and corner Michael Foreman has become one of the top defensive backs in the state. They’ll be tested against Kamiakin’s passing attack.

The Coaches
Kamiakin coach Scott Biglin is in his second season and is hungry for a state title. The former Pasco quarterback graduated in 1997, a year before the Bulldogs won the Class 4A title in 1998. If the Braves win, it will be their first state title. They finished second in 1995, losing to Curtis 49-7 in the Class 4A state championship.

What is left to say about Bellevue coach Butch Goncharoff that hasn’t been said before. If the Wolverines win, Goncharoff will have won eight of the last 10 Class 3A state titles and will have two stretches of three-straight championships in that span. The even-keeled Goncharoff will have Bellevue ready to play.

Semifinal football predictions

November 26th, 2010 at 3:42 pm by Joel Willits

Wow, what a week last week was. Surprises – Liberty doesn’t put up a fight against Bellevue and Bellarmine Prep has an amazing comeback against Bothell. Non-surprise: Skyline and Curtis both roll.

Skyline Spartans (11-1) vs. Curtis Vikings (12-0)
Joel – When everyone filled out their Class 4A brackets, this was the game etched in stone. Almost everybody knew Skyline would meet Curtis in the semifinals. Last week I predicted Kasen Williams would have a big game and he responded with 10 catches for 241 yards and three touchdowns to go with a fumble return for a touchdown. Max Browne is already looking like one of the best quarterbacks in the state. Curtis’ Rahmel Dockery is one of the state’s most dynamic players, but I think the strength – and playoff experience – of the Spartans propel the back to the 4A title game. Pick: Skyline 28-21
Kevin – Well, here it is. The 4A matchup that everybody has wanted to see this season. No. 2-ranked Curtis is looking for revenge after getting blown out 49-14 by the Spartans in last year’s quarterfinals. No. 1 Skyline, which is one game away from earning a shot at a fourth straight state title, wants to show the power still lies in KingCo. Both schools have rabid supporters, which should generate an exciting atmosphere at the Tacoma Dome. I expect the intensity to translate into a great game on the field. The Spartans have struggled with slow starts in their last three games — all contests affected by weather. The Spartans know the Tacoma Dome well, however, and it suits their high-tempo pass game perfectly. I expect a fast Skyline start and never look back. Pick: Skyline 35-14

Ferris Saxsons (12-0) Bellarmine Prep Lions (12-1)
Joel – I’m probably not the only one who thought this matchup would be between Ferris and Bothell. But the Lions stunned the Cougars last week, rallying from a halftime deficit to reach the semifinals. As a reward they get the Saxons, which haven’t had a chink in their armor this year. They proved last week against Chiawana they can win in low-scoring grind-it-out games. I think we’re going to see that again this week. Pick: Ferris 21-20
Kevin – Bellarmine is the surprise team of the 4A playoffs after knocking off Bothell last week. Can the Lions keep it up this week? It will be a tall task having to travel to snowy Spokane to face an undefeated Ferris team. I covered a similar game two years ago and conditions weren’t pleasant at Joe Albi this time of year. Bellarmine has tallied over 4,000 yards of offense this season, but Ferris’ defense has been stellar, allowing under 10 points a game. The weather combined with the travel could be too much for the Lions to overcome. Pick: Ferris 28-14

Lakes Lancers (11-1) vs. Bellevue Wolverines (11-1)
Joel – Year after year, Lakes gets the same rap: big regular season, swift playoff exit. The Lancers haven’t lost since a week three loss to Capital by just seven points. I think many people are discounting how talented the Lancers are because they’ve really only been challenged in three games this year. I think this will be a closer game than most think, but I see the Wolverines pulling out the win. They’ve won in varying ways this season – close games, tight games, coming from behind – and they are battled tested. Pick: Bellevue 35-14
Kevin – The machine that is Bellevue has done nothing but gain momentum since starting the playoffs. The Wolverines have outscored opponents 147-21 over the last three games behind their dominant Wing-T offense. Lakes is riding momentum after earning a tough overtime win at Camas last week, but this is a whole different kind of challenge. Pick: Bellevue 28-7

Kamiakin Braves (12-0) vs. Capital Cougars (12-0)
Joel – Another semifinal I thought we’d see, this should be a great game. Kamiakin has rolled through its schedule this year and the Braves thoroughly handled Mount Spokane last week. I fully expect Kamiakin to represent Eastern Washington in the championship game, beating the Cougars at Lampson Stadium in Kennewick – their home field. Pick: Kamiakin 35-21
Kevin – This is a great semifinal matchup between two undefeated programs. There hasn’t been a more dominant team east of the mountains than Kamiakin, which has outscored opponents by an average of 42-10 this season. Capital has displayed equal dominance, beating opponents by an average of 43-9. Something has to give Saturday afternoon. Who has played tougher teams? Who is more battle-tested? We will find out soon enough. Pick: Kamiakin 24-20

East Valley Knights (8-5) vs. Tumwater Thunderbirds (11-1)
Joel – The surprise of the playoffs, East Valley rather easily knocked off year-long top-5 Prosser last week. Can the magic continue? I don’t think so. Tumwater upset No.2 Lynden in the first round and should cruise to another win this week. Pick: Tumwater 44-15
Kevin – Where has East Valley come from? The Knights entered the playoffs with the worst record of any 2A team at 5-5. They have now rattled off seven straight wins, however, after starting the season 1-5. Tumwater is also on a roll, winning its last 11 games. It’s a long road for the Thunderbirds to travel, but they have proven they can win away from home after knocking off second-ranked Lynden in the first round. Pick: Tumwater 28-13

Mark Morris Monarchs (8-3) vs. Archbishop Murphy Wildcats (12-0)
Joel – Archbishop Murphy rushed for over 500 yards against Interlake last week. Over 500 yards. Think about that. The Wildcats, the wire-to-wire No.1 ranked team, should end Mark Morris’ surprising run. Pick: Archbishop Murphy 44-21
Kevin – Archbishop Murphy has remained atop 2A all season, and it’s going to take a major upset from Mark Morris to knock the Wildcats off the pedestal. Head coach Dave Ward just has too many weapons to be stopped now. Pick: Archbishop Murphy 35-14
